San Clemente

My sister-in-law, Kerry is coming out to visit in April. I am going to treat her to a day at the beach. I had to find the perfect California beach for her. I think I found it! I took a little drive north of Camp Pendleton to San Clemente State Park. I won't post too much about this beach, because I want to save it for her visit, but it has everything that makes beaches fun in CA. Beautiful surf, golden sand, ragged cliffs, active surfers and a pier. Not to mention a great little town to shop. I can't wait for her visit!

It was fun watching the boogie boarders.

Posing Peli

Greg and I are in Oceanside while Greg does some work at Camp Pendleton. We got to watch the beautiful sunset at the City Pier together. There was a pelican hanging around, waiting for a fisherman's treat. I took some photos of the funny guy.

Big Bear Skiing

One the best things about living in Yucca Valley is that everything fun is within 2 hours. The beach is two hours away, the mountains are less than two hours away, and Las Vegas is two hours away. Locals are always giving us great suggestions on interesting things to do around the area.

One of the more popular suggestions was to visit the Big Bear Mountain Resort area, up in the San Bernardino National Forest. If you've seen some of our previous posts on the view from our front yard, then you've seen Big Bear. In the summer Big Bear Resort is a cool, lakeside retreat, and in the winter is a famous Southern California ski destination.

This year has been an exceptionally great year for snow up in the mountains. We HAD to go skiing! The mountains got a huge dump of snow this past week, so this was the perfect time to go. Once the road cleared, up the mountain we went! It took an hour-and-a half to get there, and the change of climate was dramatic. It's like another world up there!

Both of us were a bit nervous about skiing, as it had been over 13 years since we last skied. Would we make complete fools out of ourselves? Would we be able to walk the next day? Well, nothing like giving it the old try (I think, old is the key word here.)

I like to call this one "A View from a Fall." :)

Turned out that it was a bit like riding a bike. Once we got rid of the nerves and got some good fitting boots, we actually did quite well! I only fell twice and Greg officially only fell once (one time I actually fell on him making him loose his ski and fall. But I don't count that as a real fall.:)

We had so much fun! It felt so good to be skiing again. To be moving fast. To feel the cool snow! Greg was a much better skiier than I. I had trouble with stopping at times, and had a couple moments where I felt completely out of control (hence the fall.) We had so much fun, though!

The day we chose to ski was the start of a very warm period up in the mountains. It was in the 50's. You know those photos of women skiing in bikini tops? Well, they were probably taken here at Big Bear, because it was very HOT for skiing. Greg and I were both melting in our ski clothing! The heat did not make for the best skiing conditions (the snow gets VERY slushy,) but we handled it the best we could.

This was about two minutes before I totally fell on my butt.

Another challenge we faced was dodging snowboarders. Big Bear has two snow parks. One park is "all-terrain" for snowboarders and the other has longer runs for skiers. We, unfortunately, chose the all-terrain park out of ignorance. There were snowboarders EVERYWHERE. And not just moving snowboarders, but fallen snowboarders, whom I started to refer to as "the dead bodies." Their bodies were strewn all over the runs! Get out of my way!

Notice all the snowboarders!

By the end of the afternoon we tired of the snowboarders and the super slushy snow and packed up for home. It was so weird to return to 70 degree weather so quickly. What a terrific day of memories!

Sunset at Dana Point

Check out the dude praying. He had been doing some yoga-like moves two minutes before I snapped this shot. Only in CA!

Dana Point

I don't know about you, but I sometimes get the itchies to get out of the house. Thursday, Greg said, "I'm going to be in the field today, and it's going to be a looong day." That was about all the permission I need to head to the beach! Hey! I now live less than three hours from the beach, and I'm gonna take full advantage of it! No more desert for me!

A friend suggested a great place to visit (not for the beach, but for the ocean) was Dana Point. I had heard that Dana Point was the premier marina in Orange County, and I wanted to see what all the hub-bub was all about. All I'm going to say is WOW!!

I am so sad to report that about an hour-and-a-half into my journey to the ocean, Greg called me and said he didn't end up going to the field and was now back home in Yucca Valley. Poo! I would have loved to share Dana Point with him!

There were three California Sea Lions playing in the harbor entrance. One of them was just laying there with its fins sticking out of the water. I have never seen anything like it! It drew quite a crowd, with everyone guessing why it was sticking its fins out.

Dana Point was like my boater's heaven. It literally broke my heart to be there. The smell of the water and the clanging sound of the sailboat masts brought me right back to Charlie Ray. I miss her so much. I walked the boardwalk around the marina wishing to be a part of it again.

The marina is protected from the ocean swells by a very large breakwall. The fun part is they allow people to walk across it and enjoy the beautiful Pacific. You have to watch out though, it'll give you a good spray (or drenching) if you're not careful!

This is the sweet Harbor Seal, the locals named "Freckles." I'm told she likes to sun herself on this rock almost everyday.

This is poor Freckles getting biffed in the face by a wave. Every time a wave would come by she would raise up her head and tail. It was kind of funny to watch!

Here's a guy who was just totally rocking out to the sounds of the ocean. I love California!

Whitewater River

I spent an afternoon at the Whitewater River Canyon, just northwest of Palm Springs. Great place to hike and enjoy running streams of water (you gotta have that, sometimes, when you live in the desert!) Most of the park is really a huge wash, with boulders and gravel every-which-way. Makes for fun hiking! The day before I visited a mountain lion was spotted in one of the back canyons, so I was on the lookout. I'd love to see a mountain lion (from afar, of course!)

Did I find a mountain lion track? I think so! I compared the data from this website and deduced that it might be one! Notice that it is about the same width as the heal mark from the adult human shoe-print nearby. Bobcat prints are less than two inches. This print was way bigger. Whoo-hoo, I found a mountain lion print!

Crazy Cool

I just wanted to pass this on, because I think this is crazy cool (you know me and my marine animals!)

Emily and Josh of the charter ship Ursa Major (the one I spent a month on in October) posted photos of several whale sharks that were feeding in Bahia de La Paz.

They actually got to swim with the gentle monsters. WILD!

Here's the link to their website, Adventure at Sea. Please visit!

Black Rock Snow

Last Monday, Yucca Valley and the surrounding areas got a boat load of snow. It wasn't too blizzardy, but it heavily coated the mountain tops and elevations about 3500ft. So beautiful!

On Tuesday, I decided to head over to Black Rock Canyon for a nice afternoon hike through the snow. It was so relaxing and quiet. I felt pretty cool when realized that I was the first human to venture down the West Canyon Trail after the snowfall. No other shoe prints!

San Gorgornio

The best part of hiking in the snow is observing all of the animal tracks. Most of the tracks I found were of cottontail rabbits, but I did find one very clear set of coyote tracks. Sweet!

I love the colors of this Beavertail Cactus against the snow.
